The NATIONAL FIRE PROTECTION ASSOCIATION has updated the requirements for the NATIONAL FIRE ALARM and SIGNALING CODE (NFPA 72).  The 2010 Edition of NFPA 72 is much more stringent concerning the “intelligibility” of the “Acoustically Distinquishable” spaces in new construction.

What was the “Fire Alarm System” in the old code is now the “Emergency Communications System” in the 2010 Edition.  The public meeting/gathering spaces now have to meet intelligibility requirements and be substantiated through proper testing using the ASTM dictated testing procedures.  There are projects that have been denied a “Certificate of Occupancy” (CO) because they could not pass the intelligibility tests.
